Near Bristoe Station, Virginia on the 15th of September 1863, two men from Company H, 55th Ohio were captured, circumstances unknown.On the 24th of September, General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker was ordered to take a relief force to Chattanooga, Tennessee to help the besieged army of General Rosecrans. The relief force consisted of the 12th Corps and the 2nd and 3rd Divisions of the 11th Corps (the 55th being in the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 11th Corps). The 55th Ohio boarded trains at Manassas Junction and proceeded west, passing through the cities of Columbus (Ohio), Indianapolis (Indiana), Loisville (Kentucky) and Nashville (Tennessee), en route to Bridgeport (Alabama). While traveling through Ohio, the 55th discovered that "every crossroad and station seemed to be lined with good things to eat. . . The loyal citizens were out in force, especially the pretty girls. . .".
