On the 4th of July, 1865, the 55th Ohio, along with other "western" regiments of the 20th Corps, were transferred to the 14th Corps, commanded by Major-General Jefferson C. Davis (no relation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis). the 14th Corps was soon to be transferred to Kentucky to the Army of the Tennessee.By June 10th, the 55th Ohio, bidding goodbye to Washington, set off for Louisville, Kentucky, where they remained until mustered out. From the time that the regiment arrived at Alexandria, Virginia (May 19) to this date, some 166 men had been discharged from service. Most of these were draftees and substitutes discharged in Washington "by order of the War department". Some were not even with the regiment being in convalescence in such places as Ohio, New York and Georgia.
